Welcome to Famously, the recently re-engineered Frank Mikus studio blog. The initial incarnation was in conjunction with a since aborted Second Life ’subsidiary.’ The Jen Bekman Gallery (one of our current clients) put up a show last year of photos ‘taken’ in Second Life. Timed with the real world show, we built a facsimile of the gallery in Second Life — read all about it here. Our proprietor, Nic Musolino, has a background in architecture, and was taken by the possibility of creating dimensional design. Given limitations of the tools in Second Life, the term architecture would be stretch.

But the opportunities to create non-traditional models of brand experiences seemed ideal. For anyone who has followed the Second Life arc over the past year, you know that this is both true and not. More practically was the problem that big footprint brands were spending big footprint money with well established firms. The areas where Frank Mikus is competitive didn’t have much interest or budget. As fun as the building experience was in Second Life, we decided not to pursue it as a stand alone business. If you are interested, we would love another opportunity.

Otherwise, as we work to update — or launch, really — our website, the we’ve decided to re-purpose this brand and blog as a place to provide both quick updates about the firm and the exploits of our clients and friends, as well as the occasional detailed insight into a particular project. Making the sausage can be a fascinating process and the narrative of it can provide better understanding of how some brands are established and function.

Oh, and why famously? Well, we were looking for a word to deacronymize Frank Mikus Second Life (FMSL). FaMouSLy. Now, we just like the sound of it. Cheers.
